Ahead of my talk at the Human Factors in Diving Conference, I had a short conversation with Gareth Lock — the founder of The Human Diver and one of the world’s leading voices on human factors in diving. We recorded a short series of videos for Facebook and LinkedIn, and I’ve brought them together here in one place.
In the clips, we talk about my background as a Clinical Psychologist working with divers, what drew me to this area of work, and what my conference talk is about. I’ll be presenting on Metabolising Experience: When Trauma Is Too Much to Process — exploring what happens when the brain gets stuck after an adverse or potentially traumatic dive, why talking about it doesn’t always help, and what can move things forward towards recovery and learning.
The Human Factors in Diving Conference is an extraordinary event: the only gathering of its kind dedicated entirely to human factors in diving, bringing together researchers, clinicians, instructors, and divers from across the world. I hope these clips give you a flavour of what I’ll be covering in my session.
