How online therapy works

More and more people are using online therapy as a convenient way to access psychological support.

What to expect

The first session focuses on exploring your concern and to decide how we will work together.  I will be asking a lot of questions.  The reason for this is to gather information that may be relevant and help you to look at what is happening.  The purpose is to develop an explanation for your concern. We will work together to build an explanation about what has got you stuck, and what is keeping you stuck.

We will review this explanation together, checking that the psychological understanding fits with your experience.  We will then use this as the basis for a plan of action to get yourself unstuck. This may include a fixed number of sessions of therapy, coaching or skills training, depending on your needs.

Sometimes more than one session will be needed to form a clear explanation. On the other hand it may also be that one or two sessions is enough to help you make sense of your concern and be enough for you to get back on course.

We will make an initial agreement about how many sessions you would like to begin with, and will review this plan regularly.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Developing a clear psychological explanation for what is going on for you means that we will likely need to talk about your personal experiences and circumstances.  What we discuss during these sessions is confidential.  I will provide further information about confidentiality before your session.

You and I share responsibility for secure exchange and storage of data and need to:
… arrange a private space for our sessions where we will not be disturbed
… ensure computing devices and online accounts are secure (i.e. anti-virus, password protected etc)
… use secure methods to send information and address emails correctly.

Your personal information (name, contact details etc. ) and case notes will be stored securely, complying with UK laws on data privacy.   See our privacy policy for details.
